What's In a Name???
The name of the state is Rhode Island, as you can all see. No one is really sure about where the name Rhode Island came from. Some people say that Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano spotted Block Island and said that it was similar to the Mediterranean island of Rhodes. Other people say that Dutch explorer Adriaen Block named it Roodt Eylandt because of its red clay. The state has two nickames: The Ocean State and Little Rhody. It is called The Ocean State because it has a lot of oceans. It is called Little Rhody because it is the smallest state of all in the United States. The Ocean State is its official nickname, but the nickname Little Rhody is more popular.
